Westerville Well Represented at May 19 Regional Invention Convention

Thirty-three students have been chosen to represent the Westerville City School District at the Regional Invention Convention, which is being held tomorrow at Columbus State Community College. Grand prize at the regional contest is $2,500 and the winner will move on to the State Finals.

District Holds First Annual Middle School Chess Tournament

On May 14, each middle school in Westerville sent their building chess club representative to participate in the first ever Middle School Chess Tournament held at the Early Learning Center. Family, friends, and staff eagerly watched the round-robin matches. Mike Frithiof, a state and national chess champion, served as judge and then shared chess strategies with the students in an interactive session after tournament play.

The Westerville Parent Council and Roush Honda hosted their ninth annual Great Educator and Mentor (GEM) Award winners recognition reception and ceremony on Monday evening, May 14. GEM awards are given to individuals who make a difference in the lives of the students in the Westerville School District. All GEM winners promote the welfare of students in the home, school and community, and each goes above and beyond the call of duty. Parent Council members surprised Roush Honda representatives by presenting them with the Terry Gordon Business Partner Award. This year 29 deserving individuals were honored.
Afternoon Session of Safety City Still Available

Safety City has a few openings for students in its afternoon session, which runs from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. The program will be held Monday through Friday, June 4 – 15, at Robert Frost Elementary School, which is located at 270 N. Spring Rd. Students who will be entering kindergarten in the fall of 2012 from Westerville and the surroundings areas are eligible to participate in the program.
A Healthy Huber Revolution

For three weeks in April, Huber Ridge Elementary School students participated in a Healthy Huber Revolution. Each of the three weeks were aimed at promoting healthy habits for students and their families. There was Be Active Week, Ban the Can Week, and Fruits and Vegetables Week. Each child who successfully completed each week earned raffle tickets for a chance to win free sports equipment. More than 25 prize bags of sports equipment were donated to benefit the children. Students who completed all three weeks were entered in to the grand prize drawing for a boy's bike and a girl's bike. As a culminating event, all Huber Ridge students were invited to Huber Ridge Night at the Westerville Community Center.
Westerville City Schools to Offer New Online Business Class This Summer

Westerville City Schools is excited to announce a brand new Online Business Education course to be offered this summer. Westerville North High School Business Education teacher Justin Kattan will be teaching the class entitled “Career & Life Essentials For College and Beyond.” The course focuses on career planning, post-secondary education and training, job/career skills, budgeting, debt management, and personal resource management, along with units involving a student’s future financial decisions.

The last day of classes for the 2011-2012 school year in the Westerville City School district is Thursday, May 24, 2012. A Teacher Professional Day will take place on Friday, May 25.

The 2012-2013 school year will start on Wednesday, August 15, 2012, when classes will begin for students in grades 1-12. The first day of kindergarten and preschool is Monday, August 20.

Commencement exercises for Westerville’s graduating class of 2012 will take place on Saturday, May 26, at the Ohio Expo/Celeste Center, which is located at 717 E. 17th Avenue in Columbus.

Westerville South High School ceremonies will be held at 10:00 a.m., followed by Westerville North High School at 2:00 p.m. and Westerville Central High School at 6:00 p.m. Graduates should report one hour before the scheduled events. Parking cost for graduates, families and friends is $5 per car and tickets are not required to attend.

Night of Reflection programs will be held at 7:00 p.m. at Westerville North on Wednesday, May 16; at Westerville South on Tuesday, May 22; and at Westerville Central on Wednesday, May 23.

The Heritage Middle School String Choir earned a “Superior” (highest possible) Rating at the Ohio Music Education Association’s Solo & Ensemble Contest held at Dublin Jerome High School on Saturday, April 14. Fifth graders at Emerson World Languages & Cultures Magnet School have been creating art to swap with students at the School for the Blind. The process began with the children describing art to blind-folded peers in their classroom. They learned from this process that art is only accessible to people who are blind if art museums create tactile reproductions of the works of art.

Government II students from Westerville Central High School participated in a Finance 101 simulation run by volunteers from KEMBA Financial. Students received mock jobs, salaries, families, and financial situations and then went through various game stations. Pupils had to make financial decisions and then saw how those decisions impacted their individual economic situations.

Wilder’s Ice Cream Social Provides Treats and Learning Opportunities

Wilder Elementary School’s annual Ice Cream Social, held on April 12, packed the house with pupils and their families. Staff scooped and served delicious bowls of ice cream in a variety of flavors. Student work was showcased throughout the building and a book fair was held in the gymnasium. Families were given an “ice cream passport” to use while checking out a number of exciting educational stations. For example, static power demonstrations were given by community member Scott Courts, and living wetland organisms were explored at a display manned by volunteer Mark Dilley.

On Thursday, April 12, Wilder Elementary School fourth and fifth grade students enjoyed a Math Camp-In. Eight classrooms were turned into math Trail Posts, complete with camp counselors (Wilder teachers) dressed in bandannas, hiking boots, and camouflage. The students hiked through the various campsites with backpacks to carry their mathematical journals.
Westerville Winter Guard Places Fifth at World Championship Competition

Westerville Winter Guard, a club sport based out of Westerville Central High School, finished 5th in the Winter Guard International World Championships held in Dayton from April 12-14. More than 100 teams competed in the preliminary round. The Westerville Guard advanced to the semi final round against 44 other groups, and eventually earned a spot in the finals, which consisted of the top 15 units. Westerville was the only unit from Central Ohio to make it to the Winter Guard International Finals competition.

The third annual Westerville City Schools Middle School Invention Convention was held at Blendon Middle School on Wednesday, April 11. Forty-one students from each of the four middle schools were invited to set up displays, which were judged by a panel of distinguished educators, administrators, and community members. Jordan Hoffman, a past Ohio Invention Convention winner and current senior at Central High school, was also on hand to judge, share her experience and offer advice to budding inventors, and assist at the awards ceremony.

Westerville City Schools announces the sponsorship of the Summer Food Service Program for Children. Free meals will be made available to eligible children 18 years of age and under or persons over 18 who are determined by a state or local public educational agency to be mentally or physically disabled. Children who are members of food stamp households or OWF assistance units are automatically eligible for free meals. To be eligible, children participating in residential camps must meet the income guidelines for reduced meals in the National School Lunch Program.
$2,000 Rotary Sunrise Grant will Help Autistic Children

Westerville Sunrise Rotary awarded Westerville Schools a $2,000 grant to purchase three Southpaw Enterprises Steamroller machines. Whittier and Cherrington Schools, home of elementary Autism units, and the Early Learning Center, where most preschool classrooms are located, have been using the colorful, four-roller, child friendly adaptations of a “squeeze machine” for several weeks. The anticipated benefits of gained focus in the classroom are noticeable for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and ADHD. Additionally, nearly 100% of the school population that has used the new equipment have enjoyed and requested more turns experiencing the device. After paying for the Steamrollers, leftover funds were used to purchase foam blocks that were secured inside a duvet cover which serves as a foam pit for jumping into and crawling under. These also provide a great experience for all of the children

It’s not every day that a super hero visits one’s school, but that’s exactly what happened at Huber Ridge Elementary on April 5. Because students surpassed their goal of raising $4,000 for the PTA Spring Fundraiser, Spiderman (aka Principal Jonathan Langhals) made his way through classrooms, surprising students and teachers, and encouraging the children to work hard and keep reading. Money raised will help the PTA pay for fun, educational assemblies for students, field trips, technology, and much more.

Pointview Hosts Math Camp-In for Students in Grades 3-5

April 3 was a special day for students in grades 3-5 at Pointview Elementary School. The Math Camp-In gave pupils the opportunity to travel to nine “trail posts” where they applied their mathematical knowledge using interesting and complex problems involving outdoor camping scenarios. Later that evening, students were invited to bring their parents to school where they used their math skills to make special campsite treats, shared fun activities and journals, and enjoyed a Pointview Campers slide show.

The Westerville City Schools Summer Splash Enrichment Academy will be held for two weeks in June to provide academic and creative challenges to highly motivated students preparing to enter grades two through eight. Sessions will be offered in the areas of visual arts, performing arts, math, technology, social studies, and science. The Westerville City School District Board of Education on April 9, 2012, held its first reading of a Budget Reduction Restoration Plan proposed by members of the district’s administrative team.

If approved, the restoration plan would negate $7.35 million in reductions and reinstate numerous positions, programs and services previously included as part of $18.5 million in reductions necessary to address a deficit at the end of Fiscal Year 2013.
Polar Bear Play-a-thon Raises more than $2,100 for Special Needs Preschool

More than $2,100 was raised at the seventh annual Westerville Special Needs PTA Polar Bear Play-a-thon held at the Westerville City Schools’ Early Learning Center on Thursday evening, March 15. (The event was previously known as the Walk-n-Roll-a-thon.) Food was sold, games and activity stations were manned by volunteers in the Sunshine Room, and a raffle took place featuring dozens of wonderful prizes donated by local vendors. Proceeds will help pay for field trips, educational opportunities, and supplies for teachers and therapists.

The Westerville North High School Mock Trial Team participated in the annual Ohio Center for Law Related Education’s State High School Mock Trial competition held March 8-10. Westerville North’s Team Tempest advanced to the state semi-finals and finished third in the State of Ohio. Westerville North’s Team Apollo also finished well at the state tournament, placing in the top 20 in the state. Both North teams finished first and second at both district and regional competitions to advance to the state contest.

Students at Westerville North High School have jumped on the bandwagon. A campaign dubbed, “Spread the Word to End the Word” began on March 7 with a luncheon designed to educate others.

It was reported recently that third grade students at Emerson World Languages & Cultures Magnet School had received tiles from the recently-demolished Japanese Tea House and Shinto Shrine in Uptown Westerville. They plan to use them to create new artwork that will remind citizens of the significance of that property and its ties to Japan.

Seventh graders from Walnut Springs Middle School spent time with the fifth graders from Cherrington Elementary on March 2 to bring energy to life through Energy Activity Stations and an Energy Fair. Energy types, resources, transfer, conservation, and usage were some of the topics of study. The event was funded by the Ohio Energy Project.

A spirited Black History Month assembly held at Westerville South High School on February 29 encouraged audience members to remain hopeful in the face of adversity, with the theme, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy!” While the program featured lots of singing and dancing, it also addressed serious topics including death, joblessness, and student concerns over the possible loss of extracurricular programs due to budget cuts.

Magnet school students and families joined with the Westerville Area Resource Ministry (W.A.R.M.) on February 28 at Westerville Central High School to host Helping Hands Night. In the weeks leading up to this event, the pupils collected food donations for WARM’s Easter dinner bags. Central College, Longfellow, Emerson, Hanby, and Robert Frost magnet schools donated a combined 628.7 pounds of food.

Third grade students at Emerson World Languages and Cultures Magnet School are creating a lasting legacy that will reflect the history of the property on the corner of Plum and State streets in Uptown Westerville. After much debate, the Japanese Tea House and Shinto Shrine were demolished, but the tiles that covered the walls of the Tea House are being re-purposed.

Wendi Farquharson Finn, author and mother of three school-aged children, passionately believes athletic programs are an amazing way to help mold children into confident adults. And she would know. As an alumnus of Buckeye Gymnastics and a graduate of the University of Illinois Chicago, she competed as a member of the Women’s Gymnastics Team from 1992-1996. Finn has also written a book called One Fateful Night, which is currently a Number One Amazon Hot New Release. She will be signing copies at Java Central from 9:00-11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 10, and will donate proceeds from each sale to the athletic departments at Westerville City Schools.

On Friday, February 24 the staff and students at Alcott Elementary School participated in Pajama Day to raise money for the Westerville Community Bowl-a-thon. Each student who wore pajamas was asked to donate $1.00 to benefit the Bowl-a-thon, which raises money for the Westerville Education Foundation, Westerville Symphony, and Westerville Chamber Foundation. Alcott raised $605.00 from the activity.

Seventh grade Energy Leaders from Heritage Middle School visited Annehurst Elementary on Thursday, February 2, to teach the fifth graders standards-based lessons at an Energy Fair. The youngsters rotated through a variety of stations with monikers like Energy Pictionary, Thermal Energy, and the Transformation of Energy. The Ohio Energy Project paid for the bus to transport pupils and make this activity possible.

Friends and family members gathered in the Westerville North High School atrium on February 22 to watch senior Joe Wilkin sign a Letter of Intent to run track at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Wilkin holds a 3.84 grade point average and, according to North’s track coach Johnny Jackson, he is “one of the hardest working athletes I have ever had.” Wilkin is the returning Ohio Capital Conference (OCC) Cardinal Division champion in the 110-meter hurdles, and is presently one of the top indoor hurdlers in the state. He is a three-time USA Junior Olympic National Qualifier in the 110-meter hurdles and a two-time qualifier in the 400-meter hurdles.

Seventh grade energy leaders from Genoa Middle School recently traveled to Huber Ridge and Whittier Elementary to share their knowledge with fifth grade students. The older pupils put on Energy Fairs at the schools, where youngsters were encouraged to travel from station to station to experiment with things like circuits, energy sources in Ohio, and sound waves. The event was organized by gifted education teacher Debbie Pellington and seventh grade science teacher Julie McSwords, and made possible through funding provided by the Ohio Energy Project.

Seniors in high school have a lot of decisions to make about what direction to take after graduation. Many are conflicted, but not Drew Fowler, an ambitious 17 year old at Westerville North High School, who was recently featured in the February 7 edition of Focus FAA. Fowler, who has grown up in a family of aviators, hopes to have his pilot’s license by this summer. He was planning to become a commercial pilot, but his participation in a recent FAA mentoring program has led to a change in direction.

The Westerville Middle School Science Fair was held on February 11 at Walnut Springs Middle School. For the third time, the science fair featured students from Walnut Springs, Blendon, Heritage, and Genoa Middle School in the Westerville City School District. Nearly 180 participants enthusiastically shared their passion for science with more than 50 judges. Forty-five students received the highest rating and qualified for the District Science Fair to be held at Columbus State Community College on March 17.

On Friday, February 3, Emerson World Languages & Cultures Magnet School recognized World Cancer Day. Last year 13-year old 7th grade Genoa Middle School student Madi Ryan collected more than 270 pairs of gently used jeans to donate to homeless teenagers in the community. This year, as an older and wiser 8th grade student, Ryan enlisted the help of her math teacher, Katie Paolini, who sweetened the incentive pot by telling her students that anyone who brought in jeans would get a free can of pop, which she donated.

Westerville City Schools has joined Stanford University and a growing number of cities which are taking a public stand against the purchase of electronics that contain conflict trace minerals. Concerned that purchases of metals could be financing armed conflict in the war ravaged Democratic Republic of Congo, the district joins Hewlett-Packard and a handful of other companies that are turning their attention to suppliers of metals, including tin, gold, tantalum, and tungsten, which are used in everyday computing products and mobile phones.
McVay Pays Tribute to our Veterans

On Thursday, November 10, the students and staff at McVay Elementary honored veterans within their school family and local community. Students wrote and then displayed letters and drawings of thanks to those who served. A reception was held for attending veterans and the students who invited them. Veterans were shown two displays honoring them: the Remembrance Table and a display case holding photos, military items, uniforms, books, and nostalgia relating to past wars.

At the Regular Session of the Westerville City Schools Board of Education on September 26, State Board of Education members Mike Collins and Kristen McKinley presented an “Excellent with Distinction” banner. The designation was bestowed on the Westerville City School District for the second year in a row by the Ohio Department of Education. Westerville met all 26 standards that comprise the 2011 State Report Card and achieved its highest-ever Performance Index Score of 101.9.
